On April 4, 2019, Libyan warlord Khalifa Haftar's forces conducted an offensive on the Libyan capital, Tripoli, and failed to seize it from the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA). Although the war ended on the 5th of June 2020, there are many people who are still missing. In Tarhuna, a town 92km from Tripoli, which was controlled by al-Kaneyat, a pro-Haftar self-styled militia, and used as a staging ground for Haftar's assault on Tripoli, hundreds of mass graves have been discovered on the Harouda family farm. Members of the militia killed almost 345 people, burying the bodies on the 8-acre farm. Whole families, women and children as young as 3 have been discovered, many of them shot at close range with their legs and hands bound. So far, only 163 mass graves have been unearthed, with 96 victims having been identified by relatives based on their remains or belongings. Despite reports of al-Kaneyat massacres as early as 2017, nothing was done by government officials, lawmakers or the United Nations. It is only now as more bodies are discovered and more evidence gathered that the full scale of the atrocities has come to light. (Photos by Nada Harib/Getty Images)
